Chen Clan Temple

Chen Clan Temple

Chen ClanTemple was built more than a hundred years ago in the Qing Dynasty. It was originally called the Chen Clan Academy because of its use as an accommodation for students across provinces to come to Guangzhou for the imperial examination.

The academy at 7th Zhongshan Road is grand and gorgeous. It is one of the remaining architectures that is still so well-preserved in its Qing Dynastic style. It is locally distinctive, especially in terms of its symmetrical design, delicate techniques, as well as the adoption of various materials for carvings like timber, stone and ceramic. Indeed, the academy's design is highly noted and praised by all archaeologists and scholars, even experts in Japan and Germany have done project studies about it. Although the accommodation for exam students is no longer needed, its presence gives hints to us modern descendants of their old time wisdom and charm.
